A short history of Lorem Ipsum
The familiar opening, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”, is a mangled passage from Cicero’s philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The original line begins “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”, roughly “Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…”. Somewhere along the way, a typesetter cut the words apart, which is why “lorem” is really the end of “dolorem”.
The text spread through printing type specimens and, in the 1980s and 1990s, into desktop publishing software, which is how it became the default filler for designers all over the world. Its strength is that it looks like natural language, with a realistic mix of short and long words, without being readable enough to distract anyone from the layout.
When to use which flavour
- Classic Latin is neutral and universally recognised as placeholder text. Use it for client presentations and when you want nobody to read the copy.
- Kickoff Ipsum suits sports blogs, fantasy league apps, match previews and club websites, so mock-ups feel on-theme in screenshots.
- Tech Ipsum fits landing pages, dashboards and product docs, where the jargon matches the real copy that will replace it.
Plain text, HTML or Markdown?
Choose plain text when you paste into Figma, Canva, Photoshop or a word processor: paragraphs are separated by a blank line and list items start with a bullet. Choose HTML when you are building a template or filling a CMS field that accepts markup; every paragraph is wrapped in its own tag and lists come as a complete unordered list.
