Key points

  • Barcelona lead LaLiga on 27 points from nine straight wins (39 scored, 9 conceded). Atlético Madrid moved to 25 on Saturday, and Real Madrid are third on 21.
  • Real Madrid's official squad has no Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended. Barcelona are without Dani Olmo, Eric García, Andreas Christensen and Roony Bardghji, and Jules Koundé is a doubt.
  • Brighton are third in the Premier League with 23 goals in seven games, the most in the division. Liverpool are fifth on 12 points.
  • Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing at training on Friday. Assistant Aaron Danks will pick the team in Freiburg.

We covered this one in depth in our full El Clásico preview, so here is the short version. Hansi Flick's side have won all nine league games, and their goal difference of +30 is far ahead of everyone else. A tenth straight win would be the best start in Spanish top-flight history, according to ESPN. It would also put them nine points clear of Madrid. The squad news cuts both ways. Barcelona's defence is badly stretched, with Christensen and Eric García injured and Koundé nursing an ankle problem. Madrid travel without Vinícius (suspended), Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy and Raúl Asencio. That leaves Kylian Mbappé to carry most of the attacking load.

Our read: Barcelona's scoring rate makes them the side to beat at home. Still, Madrid have conceded only nine league goals, the same as Barcelona, and a patched Barcelona back line facing Mbappé is the matchup that could swing it. We expect goals at both ends.

Liverpool vs Brighton Sun 17:00 AST · Anfield

Brighton arrive third, on 16 points, and their numbers are hard to argue with: 23 scored and only 5 conceded in seven games. Liverpool, now coached by Andoni Iraola, have been less steady, with three wins, three draws and a defeat. They come off a 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal. The club confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai will miss the game, Victor Muñoz is a doubt, and Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are still out. The good news is that Bradley Barcola trained normally on Friday, and Ryan Gravenberch is back from a league ban. Brighton are missing several wide players, including Kaoru Mitoma, plus Evan Ferguson. Fabian Hürzeler told BBC Sport that Pascal Struijk will be assessed and that Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer are close to returning. Brighton rotated heavily for Thursday's 0-0 draw in Jablonec, so their main players should be fresh.

Our read: Sports Illustrated points out that Liverpool have not won a league game at Anfield for six months. Brighton's defensive record makes an open, end-to-end game less likely than the attacking names suggest. A draw would not surprise us, and Liverpool need Barcola and Florian Wirtz to break down a well-organised block.

Freiburg vs Bayern Munich Sun 19:30 AST · Europa-Park Stadion

Freiburg against Bayern is third against second. Bayern have 14 points from six games and the league's best attack, with 22 goals. Dortmund went top on 17 points by beating Frankfurt 1-0 on Saturday. Away from home, though, Bayern look ordinary: the Bundesliga's own preview notes that only four of their 22 goals have come on the road, and both of their draws (at Schalke and Augsburg) were away games. Freiburg have won all three league home games, scoring 11 and conceding 2, but they have lost their last two matches, 2-1 at Leverkusen and 3-0 at Monaco. Bayern's team news is long. Kompany collapsed on Friday and is expected to miss several games. Manuel Neuer (foot), Luis Díaz, Jamal Musiala and Kim Min-jae are all out, and Joshua Kimmich is away after a family bereavement. Jonas Urbig is expected in goal.

Our read: History is on Bayern's side, since Freiburg have one win in their last 46 league meetings. Freiburg's home form and their threat from headers (a league-high four headed goals) make this a real test, though. A Bayern win would put them level with Dortmund on 17 and back on top on goal difference.

Manchester United vs Bournemouth Sun 17:00 AST · Old Trafford

United are 15th on seven points, and The Independent says they are without a win in seven games in all competitions. They come into this one after the 4-1 defeat at Como. Michael Carrick said Ayden Heaven is back after illness, Leny Yoro is available again, and Lisandro Martínez and Marcus Rashford are late calls. Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Šeško are still out. Bournemouth are 17th but arrive on a high after beating AC Milan 3-0 in the Europa League. Marco Rose told BBC Sport that last season's top scorer Junior Kroupi should get his first minutes of the season.

Our read: United have not beaten Bournemouth in their last six meetings, so form and recent history both favour the visitors. United's home crowd and a stronger defence with Yoro back could still make this tight.

The rest of the round

Hoffenheim (14th) host a Leverkusen side that has won six in a row in all competitions. Hoffenheim also have some momentum after wins over Borussia Mönchengladbach and Lyon. At the bottom of the Premier League, Sunderland (20th, four points) host Leeds (8th), and Crystal Palace and Newcastle are only a point apart in the lower half. Hull host Brentford, who have lost only once. In Spain, fourth-placed Real Betis visit Celta Vigo, who have drawn five of their nine games, and Real Sociedad (5th) host Levante. Athletic Club start the day against Getafe with both sides on nine points. Saturday's Premier League action included a London derby we reported in full: Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham.

What's at stake in the table

Manchester City and Arsenal share the Premier League lead on 21 points. A Brighton win at Anfield would take them to 19, two points off the top. In Germany, Bayern know next week's Klassiker against Dortmund would look very different if they slip in Freiburg. In Spain, a Madrid win at Camp Nou would cut the gap to three points, while a home win would make Barcelona's lead look huge after only ten rounds. On Monday the focus moves to London for the Ballon d'Or, where Harry Kane's candidacy is the big English storyline. Follow every result on our live scores and fixtures page.
