For more than three decades, BioWare made players care about their choices. Today, Electronic Arts made one of its own: the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is closing, and the next Mass Effect game is dead before it ever got a trailer.
Key points
- EA announced on October 21, 2026 that BioWare and its Edmonton studio are closing.
- Early development on the next Mass Effect game has been stopped.
- Bloomberg reports about 400 job cuts across EA, roughly 3% of staff, including about 50 at BioWare.
- It is EA's first major restructuring since its roughly $55 billion take-private deal closed in August 2026.
- Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain on track, according to EA.
What Happened
On October 21, 2026, EA announced a company-wide restructuring in an internal memo from Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO, later published on EA's website. The memo says a small BioWare team had been working on early development for a new Mass Effect, and that EA "made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we're closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace."
The executives added: "BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly."
According to Bloomberg, the restructuring cuts about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of EA's workforce, with about 50 of those roles at BioWare. EA said the decisions followed a months-long review in which it had "taken a hard look at our business," and that it will "support impacted employees in exploring other opportunities within EA."
BioWare's Legacy
BioWare said goodbye in a post on its official blog and social channels: "For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life."
The farewell named the games that defined it: Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem. It closed with: "From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story."
The past decade was harder. As The Verge notes, Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) was widely seen as a misstep, the live-service bet Anthem (2019) didn't pan out, and EA cut BioWare staff in 2025 after Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed sales expectations.
The Saudi-Led EA Deal Angle
This is EA's first major restructuring since it went private. The roughly $55 billion all-cash takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake and Affinity Partners closed in August 2026. Bloomberg reports that the leveraged buyout left EA carrying roughly $18 billion in debt, and that EA had already outlined a plan to save as much as $700 million, partly by spending less on research and development (via Quartz).
EA's memo doesn't mention the deal. It says the company is putting its money behind its biggest franchises. Battlefield 6 is described as "a great success," Respawn and DICE will team up on a future project (Bloomberg and Variety report it is likely a new Star Wars: Battlefront), and EA says it will keep "investing heavily in Apex" over the next few years.
What It Means for Mass Effect and Dragon Age Fans
- The next Mass Effect is cancelled. It was still in early development, and EA hasn't said whether the series will continue at another studio.
- The intellectual property stays with EA. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are EA franchises, but there are no announced plans for either.
- Existing games aren't affected. Nothing has been announced about removing current titles from sale.
- EA's action games are focused elsewhere: Marvel's Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game remain on track, according to the memo.
Fan Reaction
The news quickly trended on X. Fans and former developers shared memories of Shepard, Garrus, the Normandy and Thedas, along with frustration that a studio this influential is ending with a cancelled game. For many players, this feels less like losing one studio and more like the end of an era for story-driven Western RPGs.
Why it matters
BioWare helped define the modern role-playing game, and its closure marks the end of one of gaming's most influential studios. It also shows where EA's new owners are putting their money: big franchises like Battlefield and Star Wars. For fans, the Mass Effect and Dragon Age names stay with EA, but there are no plans for either series.
